Wrexham fans hit out at player's 'embarrassing' red carpet interview

Wrexham fans have made their feelings known after women's team star striker Rosie Hughes appeared to accuse the people of Wrexham of not respecting the town.

The Wrexham women's team have joined the men's squad in the US for the Wrex Coast pre-season tour

Given the huge popularity of the Welcome To Wrexham docuseries which has made stars of the men's and women's side in the US, their arrival Stateside began with a red carpet event at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles.

It was there where Hughes was interviewed by a reporter who asked her what it was like to be in California. In response Hughes appeared to suggest that the finer things on offer in LA 'would get destroyed' due to a lack of respect from the Welsh population.

“I’m living my best dream,” she said. “They call it the American dream. I’m 28 years old now. Twenty years ago, did I expect to even be doing football as more than a hobby? No, absolutely not. But for it now to be my part-time job, I’m a semi-professional, and four weeks ago I flew out to North Carolina. I am now stood here in LA. Like come on.

“Have you seen the amazing looking cars and the buildings and the people? It’s beautiful! It’s not like Wrexham. You know, I was walking down the street and there are these flowers, cactus. You wouldn’t see that in Wrexham because unfortunately it would get destroyed. Out here, there’s so much respect. And I’ve got a lot of respect for people who respect their country, you know?”

Wrexham fans on social media hit out at Hughes’ comments.

One Dragons' fan wrote on X: “This is p*** poor for someone over in America representing our town.”

An irate fan added: “This is extremely poor from Rosie Hughes. She is supposed to be representing our club and town out in the US and instead she’s doing an interview saying that the people of Wrexham don’t respect what we have and we destroy things. Disgusting to hear.”

Another supporter said: “Anyone defending Rosie’s right to an opinion is missing the point. She is there as a brand ambassador - you don’t slag off that brand. It’s like going on a work trip to a customer, trying to win business, and criticising your company in front of them."

Wrexham Women played their first of three friendlies against SoCal FC last night losing the match heavily 9-0. They will now play Tigres Femenil (under-19s) and Portland Thorns Academy, before heading back home for the new season in Adran Premier League.

And why is that? When you keep a country like it’s just come out the other side of a a war for hundred years, what do you expect?! Most people steal because they have to, not because they want to. It’s a Consequence of bad governance. Look at Japan for example, the country has only ever ranked high in economics, and it has one of the most lawful societies in the world. Crime is a clear symptom of Poverty! She is a disgrace as she made out the people of Wales are somehow like it by choice….or it’s a character trait in a people who can’t be trusted with their own country. Her remarks sum up perfectly how all self hating taffs and Anglo superiority sufferers see Wales and its people.

She's not from Wrexham and after this I don't expect her to be there beyond her current part time contract. As with many ex industrial areas, Wrexham has struggled with the work ethic of coal and steel replaced by benefits and the inevitable drugs causing anti social behaviour. I've don't watch soaps so had never heard of the actors putting the money in, but there is an element of selling escapism which some are now finding derogatory to the proud heritage of the area. Yes the US has it's red carpet bling but their ghettos down the road are much worse than anything in Cymru. Time will tell how soon the actors get bored of this project. One has decided against buying a house in the area and they understandably ditch Accrington Stanley away for a weekend at the F1 in Monte Carlo. They or the area don't have the money for the higher levels of English football, so I just hope it's not a bubble that bursts whenever they do leave.

Yeah, imagine going to Hollywood and thinking that’s representative of the whole. She just did exactly what Americans do when they go to London for a couple of days…love to claim how they “Experienced British culture”, no, you experienced English culture!

London culture has minimal resemblance to the culture of most of England. The Yorkshire and Durham coalfields, and towns like Camborne in Cornwall, have more in common with the Valleys than London. Wales itself is far too varied to have a solitary culture, there is very significant difference between Gwynedd and Gwent. I can't say much for Wrexham but they did elect a Tory MP when BoZo was PM so a significant number of residents can't be all that bright.

She isn't completely wrong but also it's not just Wrecsam by far! And as an ambassador perhaps she should have been more positive. But maybe saying the truth will make people think and behave differently.

Hopefully the people of Wrexham will grow tired of the commodified Americanised circus their football club has been turned into. I always thought I'd be happy to seeWrexham do well, their victory over Arsenal captured my interest just as I was starting to take notice of football, but since the take over it all just feels so false. My opinion of TNS is probably known to you, and my view of Wrexham now is similar. I get rather fed up of this supposed 'fairy tale' being thrust upon us when all they are doing is buying success.

Sugar daddies should be judged on the long term legacy they leave, but too many believe they can further enhance themselves by leaving the bubble burst when they walk out the door. I remember being in deepest Africa once, near a famous attraction with tourists from around the world. Waiting for a bus in a small village I noticed a commotion when some American tourists had positioned themselves on a high veranda and started shouting at the locals and throwing sweets at them, drawing a gathering crowd. They seemed to enjoy creating a commotion and the attention it brought them, but to me it did seem extremely condescending. For some reason it always comes to mind whenever I see the soap actors enjoying their latest publicity stunt.
