Professor: Tories on UKIP’s turf

By NationCymru
Barn magazine's cover this month

The Conservative Party have now occupied what was previously UKIP’s political turf, according to a Professor of Welsh Politics at Cardiff University.

In his column in this month’s Barn magazine, Richard Wyn Jones says that the majority if not all of UKIP’s candidates in Wales could lose their deposits on 8 June.

He says that the Conservative’s decision to talk about issues concerning workers’ rights has been the “final nail in UKIP’s coffin”.

Voter appeal

“I’m sure this will (privately) give the market-worshippers who have dominated [the Conservative party] since the days of Margaret Thatcher chills,” he says.

“But the evidence collected by my co-workers and myself (amongst others) suggests that it will also appeal to many of UKIP’s former supporters.

“These voters are considerably poorer and more left wing (on some measures) than the Conservative’s traditional voters.”

He notes that after swallowing the Liberal Democrats in 2015, the Conservatives are now planning the same fate for UKIP.

The June issue of Barn is now available and costs £3.99.

Interesting article, although I have never read Barn. I guess I wouldn't as whether I have read this or the hockey magazine of the same name, they both appear rather exclusive. Whether I have played hockey or speak Cymraeg there are thousands who do not or are not privileged to do so. During the local elections last month I heard statements by English and Cymrieg experts about who was leading, who was doing well and those who were doing not so good. Some of these statements were well before the full results were anywhere near being announced and I guess these experts slipped back to their land of academia ignoring the egg on their faces even if they cared. However, it was obvious that all of these statements were British promoted, and sadly our own experts in Cymru wouldn't go against the status quo. Of course, we all know now the true results even though the British media blatantly plaid (sorry) played down some results, particularly that of Plaid Cymru, for example, who did very well. What, in the first instance, annoys me is that yet again, here we have an 'expert' promoting a train of thought before a general deception called by the Tories. Many of us that read free news, mainly found on social media (now and hopefully may it continue here in Nation.Cymru), including information shared by individuals (which sadly reminds me of the evil days of Communist oppressed countries) know the lies UKIP (Tories) spread in order to deceive our nation and everyone else during the EU Referendum. Now, I guess that would be us and the English. As soon as they had deceived the voters and got what they wanted they disbanded, well before losing their seats, and started sliming their way back to the Tory party. We, the majority of the proletariat already know they are Tories, always were Tories and that they will vote Tory, now their job is done. To suggest before a General Election that the move of these people from UKIP to the Tories will encourage other less fortunate, poor proletariat to be swallowed up because they cannot think for themselves is just another way of promoting the Tory Party. Publicising suggestions such as this is more advertising to those 'hard of learning' and 'easily led', as opposed to informing them of the facts, in the hope that they will finally wake up from the continued British induced coma they are in. This is blatantly one-sided. What, in the second instance, also annoys me is that we truly do have so many experts in Cymru in many fields, that we should not need to listen to the British or any other foreign doctrine, but hey we do! As I read it, what Adam Price AM, basically said in his address to the Institute of Cymrieg Politics, Aberystwyth 2009, is that so many Cymrieg experts have not and do not go against, as many enlightened see it, the colonial dictates of Westminster when it comes to important matters specific to Cymru. For example, unless it is a privilege or self-taught as an extracurricular, even our own history is ignored by those who seek greater promotion within the British system. Like everything about us as a nation and who we are, the psyche dominated by the Stockholm Syndrome, how to break the stranglehold and remove the chains is a situation unique to Cymru and cannot be compared, for example, to the Irish or Australian situations. Another thing, as readers will come to know me, I do not use the 'w' word imposed upon us to mean a foreigner (within our own isles) by the Anglo-Saxon over 1500 years ago. Well past its use by date don't you think? Yet, here is a Cymrieg article translated not to use our proper national title, but one looped around our neck by the real foreigner strangely again, just like the 'NOT' And finally, whenever I and many, many others use the phrase Cymru Annibynnol or more so Annibyniaeth Cymraeg we tend to use an exclamation mark not a question mark! It is frightening to go against any oppressive subjugating foreign state. A state who has not only invaded, stolen, raped and infected our land, resources and people, but continues to do so. We are no different from any other indigenous people all around the world that have already fought and succeeded against a foreign imperial annexation. We have nothing to lose except our chains! Dim gorffwys tan Annibyniaeth! No rest until Independence! Diolch, Dafydd

Plaid did very well by the standards of a normal elections... but we're in the face of the greatest political turmoil for generations. The Labour Party looks to be going nowhere, Brexit, Scottish Independence... its all on the go. Yet as much as Plaid made gains people in Wales turned towards Independents as an alternative to Labour to a greater majority. Not to slam Plaid again here but they have shown no inclination towards ensuring our history is taught to our people... in fact in their manifesto they specify they defend our identity then make no further mention of it. A most peculiar choice for a party struggling to shake off its identification as the "Welsh speaking party" which is trying to break into the English speaking March... considering our history is shared no matter our language. It unites every single one of us... yet they just ignore it. The etymology of "Welsh" and "Wales" is a bit older and more complex than the English using it with us. It was a terminology that evolved from the Volcae tribe mentioned by Caesar in his writings... The Germans took their name and referred it to all Celts and Romans indiscriminately. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walhaz#From_.2AWalhaz_to_welsch Other interesting ones I can think of is German and Gael. Germani were one tribe who were in perpetual war with the Belgae... and their name came to refer to all Germans. The word "Gael" referring to the Irish was a Brythonic word for "Pirate" or "Raider"... and lets not forget the most obvious one... "Saeson". A word used by us to describe the English to remind everyone who they are and where they came from - Owain Glyndwr used it in his letters to the French King - rather than using Anglais he called them Saeson specifically to illustrate their continental pagan past.

I agree, there are issues that Plaid need to be very clear about, obviously and without question language, history, cultural policies etc., should be at the fore like everything else, if not then they still need to be more specific. Plaid and its move south has caused a few to become wary and suspicious, just like it was from a south perspective when in the north. I feel they are appealing to more and strategically the March is a hard campaign. I, though not a member of Plaid, am pleased at their progress so far as the only 'party' there for us. There are some great groups and movements out there also like YesCymru who are growing by the day. I think we should support our home grown party and movements and ensure they listen to us because, the other foreign based ones don't, they are outdated and of little relevance anymore. There are Plaid members that have subscribed to Nation.Cymru and I'd like to think they are reading these articles and comments and taking note. However, that does not mean we cannot do something ourselves and we should contact them with our concerns direct. I do! I could not help smiling when I read your last couple of paragraphs on etymology (someone else that doesn't get it confused with the study of insects obviously!). I still am smiling because now you're talking my (other) language so to speak which is prehistory/history. You are right the origin of wéalas goes back further, however I was explaining it purely in the way that the Saxon used it with regard to our ancestors and as their descendants do, knowingly or not, with us today. Originally, my comment was, believe it or not, even longer as I easily and happily get carried away when it comes to prehistory/history. However, my other half checks through my comments for spelling, grammar and content specifically to see if I'm 'tangerining' as I call it e.i., distracting myself with perhaps too much historical information! Great that we can make our comments more interesting. I am sure we'll be posting more along these lines if not a whole piece sooner, or later! Nice comms. PS. If there are any spelting or gramaticus mistakes, it's Ann's fault as she's still in bed!

From an English speaking Cymraes a refreshing article to read, i would vote for an " Annibyniaeth Cymraeg" yfory! but welcome the setting up of Nation.Cymru to give a voice to those options and discussions that are so woefully missing in the Welsh/british media diolch o galon.

I like that 'refreshing', because I always wonder if my comments, lengthy at times, are more sedative than anything else?! Diolch yn fawr iawn Christine! Whatever language we speak we should all be all inclusive with our fellow countrypeople. Not scared of or rude with eachother and be prepared to teach eachother our language amongst everything else about us as a nation. As I said before thank you very much! Dafydd

There are many many people we could get on side you class them selves as "non-nationalists"...............they're loss from the road to community empowerment is sorely lacking in Wales..........localism and internationalism can work side by side.............too much globalism is allowing injustice by the corporations on the avg person

Croeso! I agree the teaching of The history of Wales is woeful! i know very little of my own history, even though i work in the heritage sector, specifically for a tiny charity set up to protect some of our Nonconformist heritage. Plaids lack of influence in this area is a worry for me, so hopefully, if they are reading these articles!
