Russia accuses UK and France of ‘heating up’ Ukraine war amid defence push

The UK and France are “heating up the conflict” in Ukraine rather than seeking peace, Russia has suggested as Sir Keir Starmer travels to the US for crunch talks with Donald Trump.

The Prime Minister also hit back against accusations the Government was playing “silly games” over the amount of extra funding which will be raised for Britain’s defence.

Sir Keir announced the extra funding in response to “tyrant” Russian President Vladimir Putin and ongoing uncertainty over the US’s commitment to European security, although it comes at the expense of cuts to the UK’s aid budget.

Speaking during a visit to Qatar, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov claimed European nations, including the UK, were now seeking to prolong the war in Ukraine.

“The approach that is being imposed by the Europeans, first of all France and the British, is aimed… at heating up the conflict further and stopping any attempts to calm it down,” he said, according to a translation from Russia’s state news agency, Tass.

'Failed'

French President Emmanuel Macron pushed for security guarantees to enforce peace in Ukraine as he preceded Sir Keir in meeting US President Mr Trump this week.

Russian minister Mr Lavrov claimed European nations were “lying that Russia blocks negotiations” and were pursuing a “hopelessly outdated and failed” policy on Ukraine.

He also insisted Russia is not considering any options for a peace deal which will see European soldiers on the ground in Ukraine, despite Mr Trump claiming President Putin was open to such an arrangement.

Appearing at Prime Minister’s Questions ahead of his visit to the US, Sir Keir was asked by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch if the defence spending plans would allow the Government to “effectively” fund the commitment to put British troops on the ground in Ukraine.

Sir Keir replied: “She asks a serious question about the security guarantees in Ukraine, and that is extremely important because the worst of all outcomes, if there’s to be a cessation of hostilities, is that it is a short break rather than sustained and lasting peace.

Discussions

“And I think that that means there’s got to be security guarantees.

“I’ve indicated that we will play our full part. There has to be US backing, because otherwise I don’t think it will deter Putin.

“We are working on that. I am having extensive discussions about it.

“I’m not in a position to put details before the House, as she well knows, today, but I’ll continue down that route because I want a lasting peace in Ukraine and Europe for the safety and security of Ukrainians, of Europeans and of course, for everybody in this country.”

Mrs Badenoch also pressed the Prime Minister about his claim the extra defence spending would amount to £13.4 billion.

“This morning his Defence Secretary said the uplift is only £6 billion. Which is the correct figure?” she asked.

Sir Keir replied: “If you take the numbers for this financial year and then the numbers for the financial year 27/28 that’s a £13.4 billion increase.

“That is the largest sustained increase in defence spending since the Cold War, which will put us in a position to ensure the security and defence of our country and of Europe.”

Criticism

The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) was among the critics of the Government’s sums, and accused ministers of playing “silly games with numbers” over their claim that the defence spending increase to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 would mean £13.4 billion more would be spent on defence every year.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Wednesday morning, Defence Secretary John Healey was asked about criticism of the defence spending figures and said “the definition of defence numbers can be done in different ways”.

Pushed on whether the £13.4 billion figure would be correct if the assumption was that the Government did not increase the defence budget year on year in line with inflation, Mr Healey said: “That’s a cash number.”

He added: “In real terms, taking in inflation, it would be something over £6 billion. Either way, this is a big boost for defence.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to follow Sir Keir’s visit to Washington on Friday.

The Ukrainian president told reporters on Wednesday that a framework economic deal with the United States is ready – but security guarantees that Kyiv views as vital remain to be decided.

During a news conference in Kyiv, Mr Zelensky said the framework deal is a first step towards a full agreement that will be subject to ratification by Ukraine’s parliament.

Ukraine needs to know where the United States stands on its continued military support, he added.

We have had some dumb looking Prime Ministers lately but the heading photo is a cracker, all it lacks is a speech in a bubble... "I've warned him, one more cruel and stupid move and the idiot gets it"...

Well perhaps they shouldn't have heated things up themselves by, y'know, invading a sovereign country.

Here we go again Xenophobia against Russia.Dont believe everything Western MSM tells you. The war in Ukraine started in 2014 after a coupé against a Democratically elected Ukrainian government. If only the people obsessed with mass hysteria against Russia did proper research. Since 2014 15,000 ethnic Russians in Eastern Ukraine have been killed. Has anyone in the comments looked up the Fascist Azov Battalion who are part of the Ukrainian military. Has anyone in the comments section looked up Nazi Collaborator Stepan Bandera who's hero worshipped by the Zelensky regime. Surely this is something that people in Cymru can resonate with is the banning of the Russian Language in Ukrainian schools in 2017. Does the Welsh Not ring any bells. Unlike the warmongers of some Western European Nations only a fool wants a war, even Winston Churchill said Jaw Jaw is better than War War. Even in the early days of the Russian Invasion peace talks were progressing in Istanbul and both sides were on the brink of trying to end war before it escalated. Then along came Boris Johnson who told Zelensky not to go along with this and Russia must be dealt with on the battle field. Now a favourite of Nation Cymru contributors Donald J Trump has arrived on the scene.Trump has done more in a few weeks to try to end the war than what Biden has done from the outset. President Trump is quite right $350 Billion has been thrown at this war for nothing. Trump is to be applauded for what he has done and yet Keir Starmer is only trying to escalate things by behaving like the Napoleon of the 21st Century. Unlike Britain and a few other Western European Nations even the Eastern Block of the EU want a de-escalation of the conflict. Again Nations like Poland, Slovakia and Hungary are to be applauded for stating that their respective militaries will have no involvement whatsoever.

Western media platforms may not always be truthful but they do not all sing from the same hymm sheet. Do GB News and Fox News have the same agenda as BBC or CNN? At least western journalists are not imprisoned or thrown out of a window for criticising their own governments!! Ukraine is not perfect but then neither is Russia. . Quote: "Since 2014 15,000 ethnic Russians in Eastern Ukraine have been killed. Has anyone in the comments looked up the Fascist Azov Battalion who are part of the Ukrainian military. Has anyone in the comments section looked up Nazi Collaborator Stepan Bandera who’s hero worshipped by the Zelensky regime" None of this justifies invading a Sovereign country. Saddam Hussein killed thousands of Kurds, did that excuse Bush and Blairs war crimes? The UN Charter specifically forbids violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other member states, if we want peace then it is imperative that we ensure that all member states comply with that Charter irrespective of what happens within that states boundaries. That applies to America as much as it does to Russia. As for the Azov Batallion the Ukrainian military need all the help they can get. If Cymru or the UK was invaded by a powerful adversary and Tommy Robinson and his gang of thugs were incorporated into the military, that's fine by me. I would much rather waste the lives of neo-nazis than waste the lives of poorly trained conscripts!! Bandera was not innocent, but look at it from a Ukrainian perspective. As well as Nazism there is another dangerous political ideology: Communism!! Stalin starved to death millions of Ukrainians in the 1930s in a genocide known as the Holodomor. So its hardly surprising many collaborated with the Nazis when they invaded. If China invaded Japan would that be ok because they were allied with the Nazis? Lets talk about Fascism in Russia: anyone who criticises Putin is murdered, look at what happened to Navalny, or Litvinyenko!! Separatists in Chechyna blown to smitherins, Ukrainian children forcibly kidnapped by Russian solders. Furthermore a many Russians including Putin himself admire Stalin and would like to have the Soviet Union come back if they could, so criticising Putin's regime is NOT xenophobia. Who on earth are they to complain about Nazis in a. separate country? Don't take my word for it, take it from Russian You Tube bloggers: Vlad Vexler, NFKRZ, Inside Russia, Zack the Russian etc. Nothing can be achieved by appeasement. Trump has threatened to invade his neighbours, should we make concessions to him if he does? Do we really want states violating sovereign countries to become normative behaviour. Putin is the one behaving like Napoleon not Starmer.

Indeed. Happening fast in the US as well. I do wonder when the roll across the Mexico border or jump off their ships at Panama. News orgs in the US are already throwing out respected anchors because they are not white (news orgs that kissed the ring). Whitehouse will now ban news orgs they don't like. They will control the media (putins game) Bezos has just rolled the Washington Post over for trump (yesterday Bezos basically said WaPO will post what ever Trump likes, people gotta boycott Amazon). Musk in the Whitehouse cabinet briefing said that a mistake was made and they cut Ebola controls and has lied about all the other cuts and yesterday Trump, the eternal idiot, said that the EU was created to stiff the US. This is Putin control 101. Trump is off the charts bonkers led by Project 2025. We have two belligerent super powers to deal with now.
