Minister calls on Israel to end ‘indefensible’ blockade on Gaza humanitarian aid

A Foreign Office minister has called on Israel to “lift the block on aid entering Gaza now”.

Labour MPs shouted “or what” as Hamish Falconer said the UK is calling on the Israeli government to allow humanitarian organisations to save lives, and that the denial of aid is “indefensible”.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed more than 52,800 Palestinians, many of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were combatants or civilians.

Israel has obliterated vast swathes of Gaza’s urban landscape and displaced 90% of the population, often multiple times.

Condemnation

International food security experts issued a stern warning earlier this week that the Gaza Strip is likely to fall into famine if Israel does not lift its blockade on aid and stop its military campaign.

Tom Fletcher, head of the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs and previously a foreign affairs specialist to three UK prime ministers, has condemned Israel for “deliberately and unashamedly” imposing inhumane conditions on Palestinians – including the risk of famine.

Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay called an urgent question in the Commons on the UK’s assessment as to whether Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians.

Mr Falconer told MPs: “Israel’s denial of aid is appalling. Tonnes of food are currently sitting rotting at the Gaza-Israel border blocked from reaching people who are starving.

“Israeli ministers have said Israel’s decision to block this aid is a pressure lever. This is cruel and it is indefensible. Overnight, yet more Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes. This must end. The message yesterday was clear. The world demands Israel stop and change course immediately.”

Labour backbenchers shouted “or what” as Mr Falconer said: “With our allies, we are telling the government of Israel – lift the block on aid entering Gaza now, enable the UN and all humanitarians to save lives now, we need an immediate ceasefire now.

“Humanitarian aid must never be used as a political tool or military tactic, and the UK will not support any aid mechanism that seeks to deliver political or military objectives or puts vulnerable civilians at risk.”

In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an advisory opinion that ruled Israel should pay reparations to the Palestinian people, Israel’s policies violate the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, and the creation of Israeli settlements are illegal under international law.

Risk

South Africa has submitted four requests for the ICJ to investigate Israel for genocide and the court has already found that there is a “real and imminent risk” to the Palestinian people in Gaza by Israel’s military operations.

Mr Falconer told MPs that the Government supports the ICJ and its independence.

He said: “The ICJ issued a set of provisional measures in this case, and we support those measures. Israel has an obligation to implement them.”

“It is the UK Government’s long standing position that any formal determination as to whether genocide has occurred is a matter for a competent court and not for governments or non-judicial bodies.

“The UK is fully committed to upholding our responsibilities under domestic and international law, and we have at all times, acted in a manner consistent with our legal obligations, including under the Genocide Convention.”

In May 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-defence minister Yoav Gallant.

Mr Ramsay raised concerns over the risk of famine in Gaza, adding: “There’s one primary cause – Israel’s aid blockade since March 2.”

Labour MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan (Tooting) said: “Almost a million children at risk of famine and death in Gaza. Those who have stood by and allowed this to happen should hold their heads in shame.

“I call on this Government to sanction Israeli officials until the blockade is lifted because if we do not act now this will be on us.”

Labour MP Andy McDonald (Middlesbrough and Thornaby East) said there is a “growing body of opinion” that says the UK is not doing everything it can to observe international law.

I’ve said this before on here. The tide is turning on this matter which is being made even more clear by the fact that, not just Labour minister Hamish Falconer is speaking the words he has, but even Tories are chipping in. There is a saying that goes ‘big wheel, turns slowly’ but sadly, too slowly to save the lives of a known minimum of 52,000 taken and way too late to hold any credibility for those playing pathetic catch up now. I thought Trump was all bad and he is pretty much but the fact he has stopped talking to Netanyahu has brought closer the welcome prospect of him and others in his death cult being fitted with an orange boiler suit and handcuffs and placed in front of the International Criminal Court. I wonder what ‘hate marches’ Braverman is thinking now.

Well said. Personally speaking, I never thought I'd see the day when wanting a ceasefire and end to the killing on both sides deemed antisemitic. We live in sick times. This to me reveals the true agenda not only of Israel but its complicit supporters America and allies UK Labour government here in Britain. They never really wanted a two-state solution, it's all a facade, but the total and complete eradication of the Palestinian people in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. As you know. Over 50,000+ innocient civilians are dead, more dying daily, and now famine conditions on biblical proportion has been weaponized by Netanyahu. A warcrime, one of many. Their inaction speak louder than words. We recently commemorated & celebrated VE Day with pomp & ceremony as hundreds of Palestinians men women and children died in Gaza at the hands of those very Jewish ancestors of Holocaust victims. Tragic. The abused are now the abuser. I ask this simple question. Have we really learned anything from the horrors of war? I say, no. Ignorance & populism prevails. And as the old saying goes. "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat It.' Never a truer sentence spoken.

The killing of civilians by Israel is on an industrial scale since the atrocities of the Nazis. Seeing their scorch earth policy and indiscriminate destruction and targeted murders of UN aid workers , doctors & nurses, is a tolerated warcrime by the hypocritical West who turn a blind eye to their genocide. What's the point of the UN, I ask? The deliberate targeting of hospitals , schools and places of worship is protected under article 18 of the Geneva Convention. But that doesn't apply to Israel. No. They are above the law. Any law. Israel often claim that Hamas combatants were using hospitals & schools, even with no evidence. Would you believe a word They say? They have a long history of lying. Remember those British aid workers murdered. Three vehicles 1 mile apart return after delivering aid were systematically attacked even though they notified Israel who they were and their location. Zionist supporting Keir Starmer said and did nothing. And don't forget. These were British citizens murdered by a foreign state. No surprise from this agent of Israel. Another example. What about those 15 aid workers murdered recently. Israel claimed their vehicles were approaching in the dark without lights on , were engaged, gave no response, so attacked. The Israeli Army used British-made drones and intelligence to kill those aid workers. Also , they buried the evidence to hide their crimes. This only revealed when footage was found on a mobile phone proving they lied. Again nothing was done. Why am I surprised. After all. He, Keir Starmer, once said in BBC radio that it was okay for Israel to stop water, food, fuel and aid to 2.1 million people before this slimeball backtracked. A warcrime by the way. As I speak Israel have just done that very thing. Those starving Palestinians have not had fuel, food, water and medicines for over 70 days thanks to Israel blockade. Yet another warcrime ignored. Recently the horrific images of men women and children walking about hospital grounds one moment, a 2000 lb bunker buster bomb is dropped by the Israel, and the harrowing scenes of those seeking sanctuary are blown to pieces and erased from existence. Why is it that Israel can freely circumnavigate rules that apply to everyone else. When Serbia murdered over 20,000 Bosnian Muslims in the 90s, the perpetrators were hunted down and tried in the Hague for warcrimes. Not so Benjamin Netanyahu and those in his cabinet who are invited to Washington DC and London. I find so long as Israel has America's veto and their undying support they can do anything with impunity. And until America is removed as a mediator in the Middle East, their veto ended, and the UN moved out of New York to a neutral country, say Switzerland, injustices happening to the Palestinian people will continue.

The Western leaders are culpable and must be included in that group. One of them leads this "Great Britain". They should, hopefully will, face justice. Still waiting for Blair to. We won't miss them. That won't bring back the little kids who have been blown to bits with 2000lb bombs for god's sake, burned alive, lost limbs, in some cases all their limbs. Buried half alive. Those wrongs will never be righted. In the meantime those of us who recognise Palestine as a State, with a long history and culture, and care about all this, should give as much support as we can to U.N.R.W.A, and other brave groups who do their damnedest to protect Palestine and its people. .
