Lib Dems push for Crown Estate to be devolved to Wales

By Mark Mansfield
Baroness Humphreys

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have tabled an amendment to the Crown Estate Act in the House of Lords calling for the management of the Crown Estate to be devolved to Wales.

The amendment will be voted on in the House of Lords tomorrow (5 November) and is expected to have support from Plaid Cymru Peers.

The amendment is being moved by the Welsh Liberal Democrats Leader in the Lords Baroness Christine Humphreys who previously sat in the Welsh Assembly as a Member for North Wales.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have long backed the devolution of the Crown Estate, and say there is no justification for Labour not to devolve the powers, which Scotland has had since 2017.

Renewables

They argue that the income raised from renewables owned by the Estate should stay in Wales and be used to the benefit of local communities.

It is estimated that the Crown Estate is due to take in at least £1 billion in profit from offshore wind energy lease agreements in Welsh waters over the coming years.

Baroness Humphreys said: “This amendment would see the Devolution of Crown Estate management to Wales and the Welsh Government.

“The Welsh Liberal Democrats have long called the profits made from the Crown Estate to stay in Wales and be used to benefit Welsh communities.

“With Scotland having had these powers since 2017, there is absolutely no reason Wales should not be afforded the same."

Revenue

She added:“The Conservatives have chosen to deprive Wales and its communities of this potential revenue stream for years, I very much hope that Labour will not continue down the same path of failing to provide Wales with the tools it needs to stand on its own feet.

“With the devolution of the Crown Estate, we could see an economic boost built on the success of renewable energy projects around our coastline, reviving coastal communities and ensuring the benefits from these projects are actually felt by those near them.

“Over 25 years ago we were told that devolution is a process, not an event. I hope Labour will honour these words.”

Although it's admirable for the Liberal Democrats to call for the devolution of the Crown Estate to Wales only UK Labour have that power to do so. PM Keir Starmer and Labour have a simple choice to make. Devolve! If they don't. The people of Wales know which side they are on. And it's not ours. In 2026 the Senedd elections will be a litmus paper. Welsh Labour by then would have been in power for 27 years. In reality they achieved very little. New Labour had a huge majority between 1997-2010. They devolved hardly anything in that time. It was Plaid Cymru who forced Labour's arm with the One Wales agreement that gave Wales back it's Senedd Cymru after 600+ year absence. And where Plaid Cymru wants to reach for the sky for Wales, Welsh Labour prefers to bury its head in the sand. Who can recall former First Ministers Carwyn Jones & Mark Drakeford promising Wales they would get powers enjoyed by Scotland & Northern Ireland like Policing & Criminal Justice. Both failed. And yes , the Conservatives continually refuse pointblank the devolution of the simplest of powers to our Senedd such as the ability to create a National Bank Holiday to celebrate Saint David's Day. Why? Because they think of Wales as England's first trophy nation. A place to store water, a land only fit l to resource rape whenever they like. To them we are not a country but an English-owned satellite state on the western fringe of greater England. Also they , Welsh Labour, wrongly assumed having UK Labour in government at Westminster would treat Wales fairly and devolve those powers requested over the years denied by numerous Tory Welsh Secretaries. How naive , date I say it, stupid are they. Now we know the truth. Welsh Labour are spineless & toothless and cannot or will not put Wales first. Only Plaid Cymru would. For years we had an English Welsh Secretary David TC Davies who acted against the country he was supposedly in cabinet to represent. "Not one penny of HS2 consequential shall go to Wales" , this quisling said. And Labour lapdog Jo Stevens is no better. Only Wales will miss out on billions where Scotland & Northern Ireland will receive what's rightly due. Why we stand idle and do nothing when we've been slighted by both the Conservatives & Labour beggars belief? Either we stand up and fight or capitulate like cowards. I prefer to fight for Wales. You should too. Remember, Wales mirrors its people. Do something not nothing.

I wont hold my breath that Starmer and the Royals will do the right thing on Welsh Crown Estates, Clearly the Royals are raking it in on the backs of the UK taxpayer (Dispatches ch4) they would hardly notice the loss of the Crown Estates but greed knows no bounds
