'F*** the English!’ Mini-roundabout graffiti sparks concerns among councillors

Vandals have painted F*** the English! on the roundabout with a Welsh flag complete with what appears to be a stencilled Welsh dragon.

A Welsh flag and obscene anti-English graffiti has been painted on a roundabout in a north Wales seaside town.

An England flag was painted on the same mini roundabout on Maesdu Road, Llandudno last week. Conwy County Council removed the graffiti, stating that the vandalism wasted public money,  whilst North Wales Police said enquiries were ongoing.

Now vandals have painted a Welsh flag on it with the words “F*** the English”.

Patriotism

Conwy County Council has vowed to remove the latest piece of graffiti which comes as flags are being displayed both legally and illegally across the UK as part of a highly charged campaign linked to illegal immigration and asylum hotels.

Reform UK councillor Thomas Montgomery, who represents the Tudno ward said: “I think people are trying to demonstrate the patriotism and pride they have in their country, but with all of these things, we need to be mindful that patriotism and pride does not swing into racism or trying to divide the people of our town.

"I think it is disappointing to see the words that were inscribed on the roundabout after someone painted the Welsh flag, and I think a lot of residents have felt that was quite divisive within the ward and the town.”

Division 

Cllr Montgomery said he didn’t know whether the words were painted at the same time as the flag or afterwards.

He added: “Of course, we should all be able to express our pride in our country whether you do that through the Welsh flag or the Union Jack, but I think inscribing those words has turned it from demonstrating pride to trying to divide people, which I don’t think is acceptable.”

A council spokeswoman said: “Unauthorised painting or graffiti to the road surface is illegal and will be removed. This vandalism costs public money to repair and will cause disruption to road users while we clean it up.”

North Wales Police was approached for comment.

Earlier this month legendary singer Dafydd Iwan expressed his fury at the racist far-right group Voice of Wales using his anthemic song Yma o Hyd in a video without his permission.

The group, which is run by convicted fraudster Dan Morgan and Englishman Stan Robinson, is associated with the racist activist and serial criminal who uses the name Tommy Robinson.

After being banned from YouTube for the racist content of their videos, Morgan and Robinson now broadcast their xenophobic rants on Facebook.

A shame to be sure about the racism, but putting the welsh flag all over the place seems like a mighty good idea to me. I don't regard myself as a nationalist, Welsh/British or otherwise, my ancestry is fairly mixed, but I see no reason why people shouldn't be proud of places that they have contributed to and helped to build. The welsh flag is a symbol of pride, not division.

I can't say I disagree with the sentiment, at least towards English Fascists who clearly think they own Cymru/Wales and/or graffitied that roundabout to bait us. Either way this graffiti sends a clear message, "This is Cymru/Wales, not England! Learn the difference!?!"

I don't know. I didn't graffiti the roundabout. Feel free to go and ask the person, or persons, that did. Why don't you ask the English Fascists who keep graffitiing stones and roundabouts in Cymru/Wales with St. George's flags why they do that? I made my point clearly, don't rant at me as if I'm the one responsible. I'm not! More importantly I'm not a Fascist who thinks they own someone else's country!!

No place for Racism in Wales, just because other countries in the UK use it as their preferred technique of hatred, doesn't mean we should lower ourselves to their level. Come on Cymru we're better than the reform supporters.

I agree with this - I feel that this type of graffiti response just serves to 'up the anti', the 'angry factor' ... which then plays into the hands of the operators (often political) who then make mileage out of the divisions in our society.

Division - the enforcing of Us and Them narratives - is essential for Reform UK to maintain the attention of the media and those who support them. Whilst the graffiti is crude, you can understand why some people are lashing out about this implementation of English politics (and values) upon Cymru. It has gone on for 800 years, as we know, but so few English people understand that as their knowledge of Welsh history and Welsh culture, including our language, is virtually nonexistent. In amongst the misinformation there may be scope for education. Perhaps Welsh Government could lobby the UK Government to instigate teaching of the history of the nations in every school within the UK.

Since English nationalists were vandalising their national flag across Wales this sentiment is understandable. However, not all English people are Reform/far right supporters.

No, they're not. In fact it's only a minority, albeit a significant one, of English people who support so called Reform. Unfortunately, they have more support than any other party on this island right now. As much as I want to believe that's because people are naive and easily led, experience tells me that most of them are racist and xenophobic.

F the English Colonizers would have been more appropriate. All English incomers should not be tarred with the same brush. There are many English people in Cymru who are more passionate about their adopted Nation than the Welsh born English Nationalists.

I'm afraid I call bulls%£t on this. The dragons bum always points towards the invaders country. We learn this at playgroup. Someone has given the far right some crayons and rather than eat them, they've gone and got ideas above their ability.

Where I disagree with the language used, as you can make a powerful statement without swearing, those English who daubed Saint George crosses in Wales which is not only highly inflammatory but done to intimidate, also cost Welsh rate payers hundreds of not thousands to remove. And why is this deemed Anti-English and the police are involved but when done to Wales not called Cymrophobic baring in mind that English vandals painted Saint George crosses with political slogans, "Make England Great Again", also referenced Donald Trump , Nigel Farage & Reform UK, plus far-right fascist Tommy Robinson on cliffs in Stackpole, Pembrokeshire, damaging our precious national park.
