Fundraisers have smashed their target to restore a mural that celebrates diversity in Cardiff through football.

There was a public outcry when the My City My Shirt mural, in the Butetown are of the city was defaced with paint

The actions were condemned by the community as "disgraceful".

However, a fundraiser launched by Sarah Bowen on the GoFundMe website in order to raise funds to repair the mural has smashed its original target of £750 after only being launched three days ago.

So far £1,725 has been raised towards the cost of restoring the striking mural.

On the GoFundMe page Sarah Bowen wrote: "Hi, we are raising funds to cover the cost of repainting Butetown’s magnificent, #MyCityMyShirt mural of Cardiff’s ‘Mona Lisa,’ the beautiful Maimuna Indjai, by @unifycreative_.

"The mural was created to celebrate the diverse communities that make Cardiff one of the oldest, multicultural city’s in the UK and promote positive conversation around racism in football. Unfortunately last week it was racially vandalised.

"It is hoped that we can collectively show, hatred has no place in our city and racism has no place in sport, by working together to raise funds and restore the art work for all to enjoy."

What is it with these fools that deface murals, be it the Cofiwch Dryweryn wall daubed multiple times & smashed by the intellectually abnormal, or the racists who damaged the murals of footballer Marcus Rashford, and more recently, the image celebrating diversity of Cardiff City's Butetown Black community. Society's going backwards fast.
