Conservatives bring forward Senedd motion to scrap Welsh stamp duty

They didn't want regional assemblies when offered. We don't want England's jackboot. Wales has never mandated tories, but suffered under them endlessly. We are Welsh, we need our own government for our different needs to England.

Gonna need to split this down... Does anyone else agree that whatever decision is made in Westminster should apply to the UK and not England only. No. Certain powers are devolved to Wales and Wales (in the main) should be deciding those policies. In this particular case regarding Stamp Duty, there is no reason at all for Stamp Duty to be in the hands of Westminster or for Westminster to be allowed to make decisions up on it. Stamp Duty is best left in the hands of local Councils because it should be up to the local council to manage housing and general property stock. England should have its own Senedd similar to the rest of us to make decisions. This is the East Lothian question and you're quite right, England should have its own devolved settlement bringing England into line with the rest of the UK. This would necessitate changing the UK into a Federal Monarchy or a Confederate Monarchy (where the Crown retains over all control but the states largely get to do as they wish, I'm not gonna stand here and call for a Republic which as we can see from America has its own problems). Currently England under Westminster sits on a huge pot of UK money whilst the three other nations have to rely on handouts. Strictly speaking England doesn't hold any money... there is no "England" there is only The UK & Northern Ireland with Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales having some form of devolution each (not sure about Kernow). Most of the taxes are currently handled at the UK level, see Income Tax, VAT and National Insurance. Unless these taxes are devolved (which I would support to an extent), there's always going to be a 'handout' element. What England wants England gets. Let me correct that for you: What London wants London gets. The rest of the UK is crying out for funding and support. London wanted the vanity HS2 project... well it got its half... didn't get any further. Funding for 'The North', the 'South East' and 'South West' and the 'Midlands' is woefully lacking. Sure slightly more than Wales and Scotland (or it looks more because more people with fewer health problems) but to say they don't have to go cap in hand... is to ignore reality and only pay attention to what you read in the Welsh newspapers. London is by far the biggest net beneficiary of tax wealth. Westminster, the UK government, should not be the representative of England alone. I already covered this earlier but I would like to add one additional point, if England are to have its own representatives, then the ability for Westminster to legislate will need to be curtailed and it will have be given a defined purpose. Say, International Affairs, Foreign Aid, Defense. This would necessitate the break up of the NHS/Social Care/Transport/DWP/DEFRA/MoJ and also the Armed Forces with each nation hosting its own forces that work together as needed under the 'Federal' banner. It would be a wild change to how things currently work in the UK and I highly suspect the House of Lords would survive, as it would make a great place for the heads of each state and their reps to convene, as well as the majority land owners or employers.

Living near the border, this is one tax I would suggest is unified between England and wales. From estate agent friend, there is a disproportionate amount of people from England now buying up houses in Flintshire at the sub 225k bracket. Even new housing estates seem to target this bracket. But obviously don't think about that when you're living in Cardiff and making up these rules

.... 18,000 / 500000 x 100 ... 3.6%. I think if they can afford a 500k house, you can afford the 18k tax. But if that 18k is too much then perhaps try looking for a house around the 482000 mark instead. I would really love to have these problems. The rest of us are struggling to purchase something around the 90k mark.
