Unfortunately, the limits of 500 words per month translation and 1000 words per year review of the client's own translation for free, plus the refusal to do any more, even on a paid basis means this service is pretty well useless for most organisations apart from cafes wanting menus translated, as shown in the illustrations to this article, since menus usually do not contain many words. A voluntary organisation with which I am associated is putting together some informational material about a topic of relevance to our activities. Since grant bodies in Wales often require applicants to show that they produce their information bilingually, it is important for us to get this material translated in order to prove eligibility for funding. We have no first languages Welsh speakers among us, just a couple of learners who do not have the skills to deal with the literary Welsh that is required for written materials. We investigated Helo Blod, but were unable spend six months drip feeding our content to them at the permitted rate (let alone our existing untranslated website content!). Thus, we were potentially faced with either trying to raise funds to be able to pay for commercial translation, but would face obstacles when approaching Welsh grant bodies, because our information is not in bilingual format, or risking using machine translation, despite the fact that this is very iffy and sometimes outright incorrect. Fortunately, we did eventually find help on a pro bono basis. I totally support the Welsh language, and try to make my own tiny contribution to this by attending classes. However, I have been trying to learn Welsh for years and still do not have the skills to write Welsh in an acceptable manner. Moreover, the Welsh for adults courses I attend focus primarily on teaching us to have vacuous conversations about our private lives, childhood, shopping, television programmes, Christmas, summer holidays, rugby and celebrities, but do not prepare us to talk, let alone write, about important matters.
