Watch: The Offspring pay homage to TJ's at their Cardiff arena show

In a poignant reminder of the importance of grassroots music venues, US punk stars The Offspring gave a shout out to the legendary TJs on stage at their arena show in Cardiff.

Playing in front of 7000 at the Motorpoint Arena in the city centre on Tuesday evening, they reminded the crowd of their humble beginnings and how they had played in Wales previously.

They made a point of paying homage to their show at the much missed venue on Clarence Place in Newport in 1993.

Then they would have played in front of a crowd of no more than 400 in support of US punk trailblazers NOFX.

The gig staged by famed Newport promoters Cheap Sweaty Fun saw many bands from the US get their first taste of UK audiences via gigs at the venue.

The likes of Green Day, Descendents, Misfits, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Hole all played the club before making the step up to larger venues.

It was also famously where legend has it Nirvana's Kurt Cobain proposed to Courtney Love when he turned up at the Hole show.

Even though it was 28 years ago, all power to The Offspring for remembering the night they made their debut in Wales.
