Watch: Is this the most embarrassing moment in Rugby Sevens history?

By David Owens

When Germany’s John Dawe broke away with the ball in today’s World Rugby Sevens match against Canada in Vancouver, he looked certain to touch the ball down for a try.

However, just inches away from the try line the Welsh-German, a former Cardiff Met Uni student, inexplicably decided to attempt to pass the ball to a teammate.

He got it horribly wrong and his wayward pass rebounded off Canadian international Anton Ngongo, into the opposition player’s hands.

Understandably, the German player was mortified -  and rightly so - burying his head in his hands with embarrassment.

Especially as in that moment he no doubt realised that his terrible handling would no doubt be replayed time and time again for posterity.

The cheers and laughter of the crowd possibly didn't help, either.

Germany were eventually beaten by Canada 24-5.
