First woman of colour crowned Miss Wales in contest's 70 year history

Darcey Corria from Barry was named this year's Miss Wales in a ceremony in Newport on Sunday evening.

Darcey, 21, who works as a carer, comes from a mixed Welsh-Caribbean family and is the first BAME winner in the pageant's 70 year history.

In a video message posted on Facebook immediately after she was crowned Miss Wales, Darcey said: "So I have just won Miss Wales 2022 making me the first woman of colour to be crowned Miss Wales.

"I'm absolutely elated. I'm so grateful. It feels so surreal. I want to thank my friends and family and everyone who supported me along the way. I'm so excited to see where this journey takes me. Thank you."

It was the second accolade of the weekend for the beauty queen who also won the Spirit Of Miss Wales award for her hard work and dedication in fighting for equality.

Miss Wales is the Welsh qualifier for Miss World.

According to Miss Wales organisers - 'The competition is dedicated to empowering young women and fundraising for the Miss World charity, Beauty With A Purpose, which helps disadvantaged children worldwide.

'From the moment they are selected, Miss Wales finalists enjoy a calendar of experiences including photoshoots and special events as well as fundraising opportunities and media interviews.'

Darcey was chosen after a three day grand final which involved an empowerment day, a charity ball and a catwalk show.

She is now automatically guaranteed a place at Miss World – where she will join young women from more than 100 different countries from around the globe.

She also wins a package of prizes and a year of VIP experiences.

I could be wrong, but I think Stuart is advocating the ending of the "meat market" approach to women. The "anti-woke" comment seems a challenge to those who might describe themselves in that way (the same sort of people who might bang on about the "PC brigade" or the "leftist elitists" of the South Wales valleys)

I agree,but what is wrong is the coercion not the activity.Anyway I don't think many people are coerced to enter beauty contests.This is wat the argument is about and introducing prostitution into the argument is ared herring..

This is clearly a case of we must give the title to a black ethnic minority person, you only have to look at tv adverts, they are dominated by black/ethnic minorities, the whole uk has become anti- white male, diversity is all 1 way only, more women presenting men's sports on tv than men, while wales has become anti-non welsh speaker thanks to the fools in the assembly.

I mean I don’t think a lot of beauty contests but given the victory criteria, she is really pretty. also your butthurt whining about Welsh people supporting the use of our own language suggests to me that you are actually the poster normally known as Phil.

I am just saying black/ethnic minorities are given priority on just about everything these days, she is pretty, but did she really get the title because of her looks or was it the politically correct thing to do in the current climate ?, as for the welsh language give everyone in wales a vote on which language should come 1st, do not just demote the only language 85% of welsh people understand and make out it is what the people want, whether you like it or not english is the language of the vast majority and demoting it is insane.

Oh I know exactly what you are “just saying”. And what you are “just saying” is wrong on every metric. There are some actions being taken to right historic and existing wrongs but we the white men still have massively disproportionate advantages over every other social group in existence and quite frankly it’s time to share the toys more fairly! Also “demoting the English language”? By seeking to protect our own language you are playing the victim on behalf of the oppressor’s language which is spoken by a majority in the South? Me and you will never get on “Mike”. Perhaps you’d be happier back in England. You strike me as someone who would enjoy Kent.

Yes you are right about 1 thing we will never get on, because i do not speak welsh, the welsh government are discriminating against me, saying you have to speak basic welsh to get a job in the assembly is as discriminate as anyone can get, and it will not be long before it spreads to other jobs, so your precious welsh assembly government are anti- non welsh speaker and are nothing but dictators who have abused the powers they have, as for the other silly excuses you are coming up with, you cannot give more work to the 13% of the population than you give to the other 87% of the population, which is exactly what is happening on tv adverts, as for the plight of the white man, apparently we have to change our ways, we cannot even have a harmless laugh and a joke anymore, not even in private, we have to be very careful what we say or our lives could be ruined by the over zealous politically correct police, we have to put up with everybody else's ways but our ways must change, the uk has gone anti-white male in just about everything, so wake up.

Diawl you are stretching credulity here. In what what is any English only speaker in Cymru discriminated against? In what way are they even mildly inconvenienced? Unless you want to watch children's TV programmes on S4C you are put first at every turn. My heart bleeds for the harrassed, persecuted English speaking white man. You've had such a hard time of it. I'd set up a direct debit to the white man charity, but since I'm getting something like 80% of what a white English speaking man gets for the same job, I'm not sure I could afford to.

So making a crazy rule saying you must know basic welsh to get a job in the welsh assembly is not discriminating against non -welsh speakers?, of course it is because everyone understands english, it is just to stop non -welsh speakers having a voice in the assembly.

Apparently my last post has not been accepted, but you are correct on 1 point, we will never get on, but your last comment really sums up the ill feelings in wales between welsh speakers and non welsh speakers, because i was born in wales and have lived in the same town all my life, and in that town 85% do not speak welsh, now everything the council runs has to be welsh 1st, courtesy of the dictating welsh assembly, wales will never be united.

Yes here we go again, welsh speakers adamant it is what the majority of people want, how would you know ?, because the people of wales have never had a chance to speak on the issue, or even more importantly never been given the chance to vote on such an important issue, if you are so confident then let all the people of wales decide, but we know that will never happen, because dictators rule wales.

If anything it's the people in Cymru who are Anti Welsh language who are in the tiny minority, there is goodwill towards Europe's oldest language from the vast majority of Non Welsh speakers. Ever since the large influx of Non Welsh speakers to Cymru during The Industrial revolution not one person has ever been refused a service in The English language.Maybe you are referring to The Senedd as Assembly because you dislike the use of a Cymric word. You would probably be allot happier if you moved to an area of England that has a predominantly White Population.

The son of an old friend of mine was talent spotted at a South London swimming pool 30 years ago, he was a strikingly handsome 19 year old and was offered a job modelling. Half a dozen years later he had paid off the mortgage on a London suburban house, now of course, he is quids in! Why can't a young lady have the same chance? As for the language thing 'The Dragon Has Two Tongues' and when the scales come to rest things will calm down. The same goes for women and people of different backgrounds in sport and everywhere else in society so we are in a state of transition. My old man used to tell me that it takes all sorts to make a world. I just wish he had lived longer...
